Sunmin Park initially trained in biology before turning to sculpture. She graduated from Seoul National University and later studied under Rosemarie Trockel at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where she received the title of Meisterschülerin.
Park’s practice begins with an inquiry into how perception is formed under conditions in which opposing forces remain in tension rather than being resolved. Drawing on discoveries that emerge from sustained observation and embodied experience, she connects sensory elements belonging to different temporalities, scales, and material states. Through this process, a single perceptual encounter becomes capable of calling forth entirely different worlds. Rather than being governed by causal explanation, these connections generate structures through which thought moves intuitively across sensory and structural thresholds, revealing perception as something constituted relationally rather than given as a fixed condition.
This inquiry has gradually extended toward an exploration of how relationships between sensation, time, place, and existence become condensed into form. In Park’s work, form does not function as representation but emerges as a temporarily crystallized state in which accumulated sensation, environment, and embodied perception intersect. Working across drawing, sculpture, moving image, sound, photography, publication, and writing, her multi-layered practice investigates how these conditions manifest across different material and sensory registers, positioning the viewer within an unfolding process in which perception and existence take shape.
Her recent project Pale Pink Universe, commissioned by Artisti per Frescobaldi, marks a significant turning point in this trajectory. Permanently installed at CastelGiocondo in Montalcino, Italy, and simultaneously presented and acquired by MAO Museo d’Arte Orientale in Turin, the work reflects a shift in her practice beyond the temporality of exhibition toward a mode of existence that persists within a specific site and over time.
Park’s work has been exhibited at major institutions in Korea, including Nam June Paik Art Center, Leeum Museum of Art, Seoul Museum of Art, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, as well as internationally at MAO Turin (Italy), Kunstverein Neuhausen (Germany), MUSE Trento (Italy), Art Pavilion Zagreb (Croatia), and AOA:87 Berlin (Germany). She lives and works in Seoul.
박선민은 생물학으로 학업을 시작한 뒤 조각으로 전향하여 서울대학교 조소과를 졸업하고, 독일 뒤셀도르프 쿤스트아카데미에서 로즈마리 트로켈(Rosemarie Trockel) 교수 아래에서 수학하며 마이스터슐러(Meisterschülerin) 학위를 받았다.
박선민의 작업은 서로 대립하는 조건들이 해소되기보다 긴장을 유지하는 상태 속에서, 인식이 형성되는 과정을 탐구하는 데서 출발한다. 작가는 밀도 높은 관찰과 신체적 경험을 통해 발견한 감각적 단서를, 서로 다른 시간과 스케일, 물질과 상태에 속한 요소들과 연결함으로써, 하나의 지각이 전혀 다른 세계를 호출하는 구조를 드러낸다. 이러한 연결은 인과적 설명에 의해 환원되기보다, 감각과 구조를 통해 사유가 도약하는 지점을 형성하며, 세계가 고정된 실체가 아니라 관계 속에서 구성된다는 인식의 조건을 드러낸다.
이러한 탐구는 이후, 감각과 시간, 장소와 존재의 관계가 어떻게 형태로 응축되어 나타나는가에 대한 관심으로 확장된다. 박선민의 작업에서 형태는 재현된 대상이 아니라, 시간 속에서 축적된 감각과 환경, 신체의 관계가 교차하는 가운데 일시적으로 드러나는 응결된 상태로 존재한다. 드로잉, 조각, 영상, 사운드, 사진, 출판, 글쓰기를 가로지르는 다층적 실천은 이러한 관계가 서로 다른 물질과 매체 속에서 나타나는 방식을 탐색하며, 관객을 인식과 존재가 형성되는 과정 속에 위치시킨다.
아티스티 퍼 프레스코발디(Artisti per Frescobaldi)의 커미션으로 제작된 《Pale Pink Universe》는 이러한 작업 궤적의 중요한 전환점을 이룬다. 이 작품은 이탈리아 몬탈치노의 카스텔지오콘도(CastelGiocondo)에 영구 설치되었으며, 동시에 이탈리아 튜린의 MAO 동양미술관에서 선보였고 소장되었다. 이 프로젝트는 작업이 전시의 순간에 머무르지 않고, 특정한 장소와 시간 속에서 지속적으로 존재하며 변화하는 구조로 확장되었음을 보여준다.
박선민의 작품은 백남준아트센터, 리움미술관, 서울시립미술관, 국립현대미술관, 경기도미술관 등 국내 주요 기관과, MAO 동양미술관(이탈리아 튜린), 쿤스트페어라인 노이하우젠(독일), MUSE 트렌토(이탈리아), 아트 파빌리온 자그레브(크로아티아), AOA:87 베를린(독일) 등 해외 기관에서 전시되었다. 현재 서울을 기반으로 활동하고 있다.
