Sunmin Park initially trained in biology before graduating in Sculpture from Seoul National University, and later studied under Rosemarie Trockel at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where she received the title of Meisterschülerin.
Her artistic practice exists in the vibration between the micro and the macro, civilization and nature, presence and absence. With a binocular sensibility of the microscope and the telescope, she expands meticulous and dense microscopic observation into macroscopic thought and imagination. Like the relationship between image and language — where “separation” paradoxically creates “adhesion” — she continually modulates the distance between herself and the world. Her recent works explore the relationship between the unpredictable irregularities of the ever-changing external environment and the temperament and state of her inner self, expressed through photography, video, drawing, installation, publication, and writing with a synesthetic and poetic imagination.
Her recent work, <Pale Pink Universe>, commissioned by Artisti per Frescobaldi, has been permanently installed at CastelGiocondo, in Italy and is simultaneously presented at MAO in Turin. Park’s works have been exhibited at major institutions in Korea, including Namjune Paik Art Center(2023, 2021, 2019, 2011), Leeum Museum of Art(2023, 2009, 2003), Seoul Museum of Art(2024, 2020, 2018, 2017, 2014), the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art(2019, 2012), Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art(2025, 2021) and the Goethe-Institut Seoul(2013), Anyang Public Art Project(2005), Daegu Photo Biennale(2006, 2008. 2012), Dongang Photo Biennale(2011), Seoul Mediacity Biennale(2014), Busan Biennale(2006), as well as at international venues such as the Museum of Oriental Art in Turin, Italy(2025, 2024), the 7th Artisti per Frescobaldi commission project, Italy(2025), AOA:87 Berlin, Germay(2025), the Art Pavilion in Zagreb, Croatia(2024), the KV Neuhausen, Germany(2023), the MUSE, Trento(2021), and Foil Gallery, Tokyo, Japan(2009)
She lives and works in Seoul.
박선민은 한국에서 생물학으로 학업을 시작했다가 미술로 바꿔 서울대 조소과를 졸업하고, 독일 뒤셀도르프 쿤스트아카데미에서 로즈마리 트로켈(Rosemarie Trockel) 교수 아래에서 수학하며 마이스터슐러학위를 받았다.
작가의 예술적 실천은 미시와 거시, 문명과 자연, 존재와 부재 사이의 진동 속에 존재한다. 세밀하고 밀도높은 미시적 관찰을 거시적인 사유와 상상으로 확장하는 양안의 감각으로, ‘분리’됨으로써 오히려 ‘달라붙기’를 만드는 이미지와 언어의 관계처럼 작가는 자신과 세계와의 거리를 다양하게 변주한다. 최근 작업은 끊임없이 변화하는 외부환경의 예상할 수 없는 불규칙성과 작가 내면의 성질과 상태 사이의 관계를 공감각적이고 시적인 상상력으로 사진, 영상, 드로잉, 설치, 출판, 글쓰기를 아우르며 표현하고 있다.
최근 작품으로는 아티스티 퍼 프레스코발디의 커미션 프로젝트로 <Pale Pink Universe> 가 이탈리아 카스텔지오콘도에 영구설치되었으며 MAO 튜린에서도 동시에 선보이고 있다. 박선민의 작품은 백남준아트센터(2023, 2021, 2019, 2011), 리움미술관(2023, 2009, 2003), 서울시립미술관(2024, 2020, 2018, 2017, 2014), 국립현대미술관(2019, 2012), 경기도미술관(2025, 2021), 괴테인스티튜트(2013), 안양공공미술프로젝트(2005), 대구사진비엔날레(2006, 2008. 2012), 동강사진비엔날레(2011), 서울미디어씨티(2014), 부산비엔날레(2006)등 국내 주요 기관과, 마오 동양미술관, 튜린, 이탈리아(2025, 2024), 제 7회 아티스티 퍼 프레스코발디 커미션 프로젝트(2025), AOA:87 베를린, 독일(2025), 아트 파밀리온 자그레브, 크로아티아(2024), 노이하우젠 쿤스트페어라인, 독일(2023), 더 뮤즈, 트렌토, 이탈리아(2021), 포일 갤러리, 도쿄, 일본(2009) 등의 해외 기관에서 전시되었다.
현재 서울에서 거주하며 작업하고 있다.
