ebony and ivory 흑과 백, 2014, mixed media, dimension variable
In a German newspaper from 2001, which I happened to open by chance, the gaze of a white man in a bank advertisement at the bottom of the page sharply contrasted with the eyes of a young Black boy pictured in an article above about Africa’s fragile medical infrastructure. I kept the newspaper for many years.
Thirteen years later, I enlarged it, laid it on the floor, and arranged harmless, beautiful black and white plants over its surface, creating a visual contrast between the structures of human society and a world of plants without such distinctions.
우연히 펼쳤던 2001년 독일 신문에서, 은행 광고 속 백인의 눈빛과 아프리카의 열악한 의료 인프라에 관한 기사에 실린 흑인 소년의 눈빛이 인상적으로 대조되어 오래 간직하고 있었다.
13년 후, 그 신문을 크게 확대해 바닥에 깔고 그 위에 흑과 백의 무해하고 아름다운 식물들을 배치하면서 인간 사회의 구조와 식물의 구분 없는 세계를 대조적으로 제시한 작업이다.
