6 Minute Versus was developed through monthly filming at Gubuk-ri Beach on Sorokdo over the course of a year. In this sense, the work can be understood as a long-term time-lapse compressing a year of gradual change.
Using the same horizontal composition of bamboo grove and shoreline throughout the seasons, the work observes two different temporalities: the cyclical changes of nature and the persistence of artificial waste accumulating and shifting along the coast. While the bamboo grove dries and transforms with the seasons, Styrofoam and aquaculture debris do not disappear; they break apart, move, and remain.
The sound structure begins with the contrast between natural sounds and noises produced by human civilization. An airplane engine, accidentally recorded among birdsong, waves, and wind, sounded strikingly alien within the environment of Sorokdo. This led to a progression in sound—from natural sound to mechanical noise, then to the refined sound of an instrument, and finally toward the order of music.
Improvised viola was introduced within this structure, moving between mechanical noise and the imitation of birdsong. The sound gradually approaches the threshold of musical order, but stops just before it fully takes form.
Six-Minute Contrast brings together bamboo and waste, cyclical change and residue, natural sound, the noise of civilization, and music within a single field of image and time.
〈6분 대비〉는 소록도를 1년간 기록하는 과정에서 구북리 해변을 매달 반복해서 촬영하며 만들어진 영상 작업으로, 1년의 변화를 압축한 긴 시간의 타임랩스라고 할 수 있다.
대숲과 해변이 수평으로 나뉜 동일한 구도를 계절마다 촬영하면서, 자연의 순환과 해안에 쌓였다 이동하는 인공 폐기물의 서로 다른 시간성을 관찰했다. 푸르던 대숲은 계절에 따라 마르고 다시 변화하지만, 스티로폼과 양식장 폐기물은 사라지지 않은 채 부서지고 이동하며 해변에 잔존한다.
영상의 사운드는 자연의 소리와 인간이 만들어낸 소음의 대비에서 출발한다. 새소리와 파도 소리 사이로 우연히 녹음된 비행기 엔진음은 소록도 해변의 환경 안에서 이질적인 문명의 소음으로 들렸고, 이를 계기로 자연음에서 기계적 소음으로, 다시 정제된 악기의 소리와 음악이라는 질서로 이어지는 사운드의 변화를 사유하게 되었다.
이에 비올라의 즉흥 연주를 더해 기계음과 새소리 사이를 오가도록 구성했으며, 소리는 점차 음악적 질서의 징후를 드러내지만 완전한 형태에 도달하기 직전 멈춘다.
〈6분 대비〉는 대숲과 폐기물, 순환과 잔존, 자연의 소리와 문명의 소음과 음악이 하나의 화면과 시간 안에서 서로 맞닿고 어긋나는 상태를 보여준다.
