The Art Hall at Dongdaemun Design Plaza is defined by Zaha Hadid’s geometric floor patterns and the organic volume of its roof. Within this highly artificial architectural environment, the installation presents the passage of time through living plants as they emerge, grow, decline, and disappear.
Plants themselves are complex yet highly ordered assemblages of form. The work focuses on the contrast between Zaha Hadid’s geometric formal language and the organic morphology of living organisms found in nature.
The planting is divided into four sections representing the four seasons: spring as emergence, summer as growth, autumn as fruition, and winter as dormancy. Key colors associated with each season were sampled from hues frequently found in Zaha Hadid’s paintings.
Glass panels are used to evoke processes of growth and disappearance. Their transparent surfaces introduce seasonal color while simultaneously reflecting the surrounding architecture and planted forms, allowing the installation to merge with the space.
Twelve stainless-steel plant containers symbolize the twelve months of the year and formally extend the diamond grid of the floor.
The plant species are selected according to the distinctive characteristics and color palette of each season.
