On Wednesday, April 16, 2014, in response to the social disaster of the Sewol ferry sinking, I composed a poem by collaging newspaper articles and sentences.
By cutting and rearranging the language and picture of newspapers as a form of public record, I created a short poem expressing a deeply personal response to the disaster. The poem was then printed on newsprint and stacked on the museum floor for visitors to take away.
This work is part of a long-running series of newspaper poems that explores how the public language of the newspaper can be recontextualized through individual perception and memory, respond to social events, and become another voice.
