ONE AND J. Gallery proudly presents the solo exhibition of Sunmin Park (b.1971, Korea) titled “A Walk into You” (curated by KIM, Sung woo) from 6 May until 5 June 2022. Having perceived the venue of 3 floors as a single body, Park proposes the gallery’s respective floor as corresponding to the world of thought (1st floor), vision(2nd floor) and emotion(3rd floor). Park has provided the viewer with a vast array of senses, inviting us to delve deep into physical(body) and mental(mind) spaces throughout this exhibition.
On the first floor of thought and idea, words of poetic moments that Park had encountered while reading newspapers have gathered to express themselves in various media, such as 3dimensional work, photography, drawing, video, sound, etc. She had collected the momentary fragments of life in the newspapers that happen and pass daily and piled them up in the present. Then she interpreted these fragments within her new sense and time frame. Going upstairs from the first floor, we get to experience an unfamiliar viewpoint of first seeing the sculptures from the bottom. With our freshened vision, we slowly step onto the brightest floor. This naturally lit second floor is a space which stimulates the surface of our retina. In <Your Faces 1, 2> (2022), a common image of flowers changes its color to black and white, it is turned upside down, its focus blurred to render it unfamiliar. Hence our familiar perspective of daily life is shaken. On the 3rd floor, the last part of
the journey, there is a cave-like dark and deep space with the theme of emotion. Salt crystals are used to draw spiral forms which only get erased soon afterward in the video <The Lines that are Erased While Drawing> (2021), and such spiral forms continue in <Daystar 5 - The Lines that are Erased While Drawing>(2022). In harmony with these works, <Small Eats Big Eats Small> (2021) shows the variable images of water reacting to heat, pressure, and other physical conditions. Viewers are welcome to enjoy the 3 video works in a relaxed state of mind, and we hope it will be an intimate time to observe one’s own emotions even for a short while.
원앤제이 갤러리에서는 2022년 5월 6일부터 6월 5일까지 박선민 작가(b. 1971, 한국)의 개인전 《A Walk into You》(기획: 김성우)를 개최한다. 작가는 3개의 층으로 구분된 원앤제이 갤러리의 공간을 하나의 몸으로 바라보고, 각각의 층별 공간과 조응하는 생각(1층), 시각(2층), 감정(3층)의 세계를 제안한다. 작가는 관람자로 하여금 전시를 통해 물리적(육체) 그리고 정신적(내면)으로 깊숙이 들어갈 수 있도록 다양한 감각을 열어 둔다. 사고와 생각의 공간인 1층에서는 작가가 신문에서 마주한 시적 순간의 언어들이 모여 입체, 사진, 드로잉, 영상, 사운드 등 다양한 매체로 펼쳐진다. 작가는 신문에 담기는 매일 일어나고 지나가는 삶의 순간들을 모아 현재에 축적하고, 새로운 감각과 시간 속에서 다시금 풀어낸다. 1층에서 2층으로 올라가는 계단에서는 조각을 바닥에서 보는 색다른 관점을 경험하며 시각이 환기되고, 가장 조도가 밝은 2층으로 서서히 발딛게 된다. 밝게 자연광이 들이치는 2층은 우리의 망막 표면을 자극하는 공간이다. 보편적인 꽃의 형상은 <너의 표정들 1, 2>(2022)에서 컬러에서 흑백으로 색이 바뀌고, 상이 뒤집히고, 초점을 흐뜨려지면서 낯설게 보인다. 이에 우리가 일상에서 익숙하게 보던 시각의 관점을 흔든다. 전시의 마지막 동선인 3층은 어둡고 깊은 동굴과 같은 감정의 공간이다. 결정화된 소금 결정이 나선형을 그리고 지우는 영상 <그리면서 지워지는 선>(2021), <그리면서 지워지는 선>의 나선형을 연장해 보여주는 <Daystar 5 - 그리면서 지워지는 선>(2022), 물이 열, 압력 등 물리적 조건에 의해 달라지는 형상을 보여주는 <Small Eats Big Eats Small>(2021)이 서로 조응하며 펼쳐진다. 관람객은 이완된 마음으로 3개의 영상 작품을 바라보며, 자신의 내밀한 감정을 잠시나마 두드려보는 시간을 갖길 바란다.
