Recited Poem :

The first light

so radiant in its beauty—

even the sun

fades

into shadow.

Above,

n a sky full of love,

it shines

with purity,

with grace.

And I fall—

helpless—

into its glow.

Its brilliance burns

within my heart,

impossible to resist.

Now

it fills

the world.

But like my beloved

turning away,

that light

vanishes.

And Love—

Love becomes

an arrow,

aimed at

my brief life.

translated and adapted into contemporary poetry of Dino Frescobaldi, Canzoni e sonetti, II

Pale Pink Universe (2025) is a video installation accompanied by drawings and sculptural elements that examines material transformation through the culture of agriculture and winemaking. Developed as a commissioned project for Artisti per Frescobaldi at the CastelGiocondo estate in Montalcino, the work approaches the Tuscan landscape as a stratified field in which nature, cultivation, architecture, and historical time are continuously re-mediated.

The video traces the process of wine in reverse—not as a narrative of production or consumption, but as a circulation across states of matter. Before wine exists as liquid, it appears as solid form: vines, fruit, flowers, branches, and roots. Prior to this, the process condenses into a single point—the grape seed. From this point, matter unfolds into line, surface, and volume, before returning again to liquid through chemical transformation. Evaporation, rainfall, and absorption into soil form a loop in which matter never stabilizes but remains in flux.

The sound by Bojan Vuletić amplifies the microscopic movements of particles within liquid wine through abstract sonic textures, allowing them to be perceived as large-scale climatic sensations—cosmic space, stars, wind, and waves. Through this sonic translation, micro-scale material processes unfold into a perceptual experience of macro-scale environments, collapsing inner and outer worlds into a shared sensory field.

The floral imagery in the video originates not from the vineyard’s vegetation itself, but from the richly ornamented floral fresco wall paintings inside the CastelGiocondo estate. Within this architectural interior, nature appears already transformed—stylized, intensified, and mediated through decorative form. By photographing these fresco details and translating them into drawing, the work engages with nature as an image already shaped by culture. These drawings further expand into sculptural forms, transforming flat images into bronze sculptures.

The sequence of transformation—from fresco to photograph, from drawing to sculpture—is translated into the language of the video itself, unfolding the work as an accumulation of material translations rather than a fixed image.

The audiovisual structure develops toward a climactic sequence in which botanical motifs, once immobilized within architectural ornament, regain movement through the moving image. These forms overlap with an extreme close-up of a grape seed, reversing the temporality of plant life. The seed first appears as an enlarged mass—suggesting a vast material body or an abstracted fragment of flesh—before slowly receding into an almost imperceptible point. This contraction traces time backward, returning to a condensed origin.

It is within this final seed sequence that poetic language emerges as a voice-over: a medieval stil novo sonnet by Dino Frescobaldi is recited in English, allowing language to inhabit matter at its smallest scale and bind historical time to material transformation.

In the context of an increasingly unstable ecological condition, Pale Pink Universe proposes a mode of perception attentive to scale, mediation, and transformation. By translating matter, image, sound, and language into one another, the work invites viewers to sense the world more slowly, sensitively, and expansively—toward forms of nature that persist not as totality, but as fragments continuously shaped by human and non-human forces. (artist note)

Bojan Vuletić
