Ear and Eye: Noam was commissioned for the Gangneung International Art Festival. Observing through the camera lens the accumulated time and history embedded in Noam Tunnel in Noam-dong, Gangneung, the video installation transforms the structural characteristics of the tunnel, cut through a mountain, into an audiovisual experience, portraying the ordinary people who pass through it in a synesthetic way.

The work began with an imagining: “If the mountain containing Noam Tunnel were the head of a giant, could the two entrances of the tunnel become sensory organs, like eyes and ears?” From this idea, I spent an extended period observing and filming local residents as they moved through this sensory passage. Their unposed movements and the everyday sounds of the tunnel are overlaid with the quiet, delicate guitar melodies of The Neighborhood of Broken Umbrellas (2018) by Brooklyn-born musician David Grubbs. As the field recordings resonating inside the tunnel intersect with the music, the resulting atmosphere draws attention, with a gentle gaze, to the ordinary lives expressed through the movements and presence of people passing through the eyes and ears of Noam.

The spatial structure of Noam Tunnel was then translated into the exhibition space. Its two entrances, carrying traces of time and illuminated by light entering from outside, were transformed into eyes and ears and reconstructed within a vast old warehouse: two eyes on the front wall and two ears on the side walls. Video projections, darkness, field recordings, and music were brought together to form a site-specific installation.

Entering the warehouse from the bustling market streets outside, visitors are enveloped in deep darkness and encounter two enormous blinking eyes before them. The experience is akin to entering the head of a giant and, through its sensory organs, watching and listening to the lives of others. Through this immersive installation, observations of the locality and the everyday lives of its residents are transformed into an audiovisual space that connects the geographical form of the mountain to the architectural structure of the tunnel, and finally to the human sensory organs of the eyes and ears.

The Ears and Eyes of Noam

Both eyes are on the same path

Both ears are on the opposite side

Eyes are easily fooled

Ears don’t.

Walking in the tunnel drilled in a knoll is

entering in the dark entrance and betraying it

to head close to the bright exit.

I, who is standing here

turn back on the hole I entered and

getting close to that front exit is

the thing to become a time.

Reaching the middle of the tunnel

when the sound from the back of the entrance and front of the exit

echoes from the back and front of my body,

if I turn my body to the left or right

I can‘t see the entrance or exit

I face a dark wall.

At that time, when the sound from the left entrance and right exit

being heard from both ears,

if I could unite both sides of the tunnel with my ears,

my head becomes a mountain.

A mountain that has two ears.

After this knoll got ears a long time ago,

countless number of people interfered.

Listening to people who come and go

if you curious about them

ears should be eyes.

If you listen carefully

like you have been kept an eye on it

ears could become eyes.

Past entrance and future exit have

lost its time.

To one direction

Now with the eyes of the left and right

Watching people who come and go

the dark inside and bright outside

in the eyes of the darkness.

In this mountain.

No, in this head,

No, in this house.

A house that has two eyes.
