A Room for Boredom 지루함을 위한 방 , 1995, space specific installation, newspapers, 250X280X360cm

Sunmin Park’s installation entitled a room for boredom (1995) poses complex questions, as it is a unique piece in her creation, showed in a moment of transition and personal expansion. What was intricate about the installation was that it disclosed an antagonist situation: from the outside it looked like a formalist sculpture, while the inside delivered a syncretic experience, having in mind the claustrophobic space, the smell of the petroleum-based ink and not lastly, the symbolism of the newspapers.

From another perspective, the inside served primarily as a “schweigende Rückzug (silent retreat)” for the artist, a condition that she gifted to the public. Once inside, the individual was not able to see anything, she/he was given only one possibility—to feel—whether it was the refine texture of the newspapers that through stacking became rigid, whether it was the soothing feeling of serenity while around the crowd was roaming.

In the heterotopic space generated within the “newspaper room,” the viewpoint was inverted. In 2015, curator Sojung Kang wrote that “… viewing according to Park Sunmin is not about the daily attitude of contemplation, but existential rumination. Through her gaze, the viewpoint of the subject transcends existential time and creates the new horizon while crossing over daily space.” It is the everyday or the daily constellation that separated the two distinct sides of the installation, bringing a sense of equilibrium and assuring continuity with the next stage of Park’s creation.
