At its height, Deoksugung occupied an area roughly three times larger than its present grounds and was densely filled with numerous palace buildings, corridors, and government offices. Gyeongungung once contained more than 170 buildings, of which only 15 remain today. The short-lived glory of Gyeongungung leads the artists to reflect on transience, temporality, and the ultimate principles governing the movement of things.
In one corner of Deoksugung, once densely occupied by palace buildings but now left largely empty, Choi Sunghun and Park Sunmin scatter and stack crystal blocks.
Every crystal (結晶, 결정) in the world emerges through a long, quiet, and careful process before, at a certain moment, being determined (決定, 결정) into what appears to be a perfect form. Yet once that fleeting moment passes, it may break apart, disappear, and become incorporated into another order. Under conditions in which we can never know what will ultimately remain, things continue to move without cease. Thus, a crystal can be both dazzling and transient.
(Curatorial Text)
