𝘕𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘑𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦 (2015) begins with the sounds of a jungle filling a darkened screen. The movements that appear as the camera roams through the jungle are similar to those of an actual jungle exploration—but everything is shot from an extremely myopic perspective in order to avoid the frame of the greenhouse structure that appears whenever the camera’s focus pulls back even slightly. The work is filled with vibrant beauty as the various jungle plants seem to brush past the viewer’s nose. Yet it also reveals that the jungle in question is not an ‘open forest’ with an independently living ecosystem, but a soundless ‘closed garden’ based entirely on an artificial design. The vision of the rainforest presents with silence as a metaphor of the artificiality. Before the video or after the fade-out, when the jungle disappears, the sound of nature asks us. What is 'real jungle'? The video exhibits that primeval forests do not exist as an immense territory on the earth today: isolated, devastated, and extincted.
검은 화면을 꽉 채우는 정글의 소리로 시작하는 <근시정글 2015>은 눈 앞 30cm 정도의 초점거리로 천천히 숲의 이미지로 페이드인 되면서 동시에 소리는 천천히 소거된다. 열대우림을 헤매는 영상은 마치 진짜 정글 탐험처럼 보이지만, 카메라의 초점을 조금이라도 멀리 두면 드러나는 온실 건축의 프레임을 배제하고자 고도근시의 시선으로 촬영되었다. 코 끝을 스치듯 여러 열대우림 초목들의 생동하는 아름다움으로 충만한 영상이지만, 이 정글이 스스로 살아있는 생태계의 “열린 숲”이 아니라 철저히 인공적으로 디자인되고 조절되는 어떠한 소리도 없는 “닫힌 정원”임을, 이미지와 소리가 가상과 진실을 상징하는 감각의 대비적인 구조로써 표현된다. 영상이 나오기 전이나 페이드아웃 후, 정글이 사라진 어둠 속에서 자연의 소리가 우리에게 진짜 정글이 무엇인지 질문한다. 원시림은 이 지구상에서 더이상 거대한 영역으로 이어지지 못하고 점이나 섬처럼 고립되어있고 급격히 작아지고 소멸되고 있음을 표현하고 있다.
