Artist Note

Paying tribute to an artist who lived in my neighborhood long ago is a matter of discovering intersections within the axes of space and time—the writer Yi Tae-jun, who defected to North Korea and is known to have passed away there. When I connect the fragmentary records of his art and life and draw an imaginary line of his life journey that extends to the world after death, my life linked to him acquires a new dimension. His life and art are then revived in me. Would this ever be only about Yi Tae-jun? From now on, if I magnify the year 2024 on the web of my life, which is a succession of never-ending encounters, relationships, separation, distress, and walking again, I will probably remember the lives of three people who were connected to me, one of which is Yi Tae-jun.

I overlap his fierce life on this trail, on which he should have walked long before me. The first step of this work was my desire to follow him, singing a song for him. As I walked along this trail, which crosses the 80 years laid between him and me, my song became a troll, repeating the song he sang before me. Here is the line of time created by the song, the line of space created by the trail, and the world where the two lives are connected.

If someone can join this world, feeling the song in the paintings, sculptures, and landscapes of the trail, this world connected to his journey will grow even more.

작가노트

내가 사는 동네에 오래전 살았던 예술가에게 헌정하는 작업은 공간과 시간의 축 안에서 교차점을 발견하는 일이다. 작고한 것으로 알려진 월북작가 이태준의 예술과 삶에 대한 조각난 기록을 이어 그 삶의 여정을 선으로 그어보다 삶 이후의 세계까지 연장선을 상상하다 보면, 그와 연결된 나의 삶은 어느새 입체가 된다. 그때 그의 삶과 예술은 내 안에 소생하는 것이다. 이것이 어디 이태준과의 일일 뿐일까? 끊임없이 만나고 관계하고 헤어지고 흔들리며 다시 걷고 있는 내 삶의 그물망에 2024년이라는 시간의 루페를 들이댄다면, 나는 앞으로 나와 연결되었던 세 사람의 삶을 유독 기억하게 될 것이다. 그 중 한 사람이 이태준이다.

나보다 한참 앞서 치열하게 살아간 그의 삶을 그도 걸었을 이 산책길에 겹쳐본다. 그리고 나는 그를 위한 노래를 부르며 뒤따르고 싶다는 것이 이 작업의 첫 걸음이었다. 그와 나 사이에 놓인 80년을 건너는 이 산책길에서 그가 앞서 부르는 노래를 뒤따라 부르며 걷는 나의 노래는 돌림노래가 되었다. 노래가 만드는 시간의 선과 길이 만드는 공간의 선, 그리고 두 삶이 연결된 세계가 여기 있다.

그림과 조각 그리고 산책길의 풍경 안에서 음악을 느끼며, 누군가 이 세계 안으로 들어올 수 있다면, 그의 여정과 연결된 세계는 조금 더 자라게 될 것이다.

This drawing depicts the distinctive character of a path shared by Yi Tae-jun and Sunmin Park, separated by eighty years.The route ascending Bugaksan Mountain—an enduring presence through time—was once a narrow trail walked by Yi Tae-jun in the past. As the path reaches its highest point and turns right, it passes through the gate of the old city wall and descends into the alleys of Bukjeong Village, a humble neighborhood where Sunmin Park’s studio is now located. This transformation of the path reflects the structure of the song within the sound piece.

이 드로잉은 이태준과 박선민이 80년의 시간 차이를 두고 공유하는 길의 특징을 표현했다. 오랜 세월 존재해왔던 북악산으로 오르는 길은 80년 전 과거에 살았던 이태준의 오솔길이며, 그 길이 가장 높은 곳에서 우측으로 향하면 한양도성의 문을 통과하여 박선민의 작업실이 있는 가난한 동네인 북정마을의 골목길로 내려오게 되는 길의 변화를 표현하였으며 그런 변화는 이 사운드의 노래의 구조가 된다.

These two drawings visualize a fugue-like round song shared between Lee Tae-jun and Sunmin Park. The first drawing presents the early score and melodic progression of the song, which is then split in half—one part shifted backward and collaged to create a round. The second drawing consists of the remnants and traces left from that process.

The first resembles a mountain, reflecting Lee Tae-jun’s classical and static musical character. The second evokes mountain outlines emerging through mist, with fragments that once marked the scale now scattered in the air—suggesting a freer, more jazz-like musical world of Sunmin Park.

이 두 개의 드로잉은 이태준과 박선민의 푸가 형식 돌림노래를 시각화한 것이다. 첫 번째 드로잉은 노래 초반의 스코어와 음의 진행을 표시한 뒤, 이를 반으로 나누어 한쪽을 뒤로 배치하고 콜라주한 작업이다. 두 번째 드로잉은 그 잔여물과 흔적으로 이루어져 있다.

첫 번째는 산의 형상을 닮았으며, 고전적이고 정적인 이태준의 음악적 성향을 드러낸다. 두 번째는 드로잉의 흔적들이 안개 속 산의 윤곽처럼 떠오르고, 음계를 구성했던 조각들이 공기 중에 흩어지듯 배치되어, 보다 자유롭고 재즈적인 박선민의 음악 세계와 연결된다.

This sculpture, created in 2024, connects Sunmin Park’s relationships with those she has parted from to the soundwalk she shared with Tae-Jun Yi. The red line represents Park herself; the other lines signify the presence of others, while the black stripes visualize the path of the soundwalk with Tae-Jun Yi. The lifelines of four individuals meet, disperse, and reconnect—revealing a cyclical journey through life, death, and what follows. Through these connections, Park’s own lifeline is ultimately shown to stand upright—no longer collapsing but enduring on its own.

이 조각은 2024년, 박선민이 이별한 사람들과의 관계를 이태준과의 산책길 기억과 연결해 표현한 작업이다. 붉은 선은 박선민 자신을, 나머지 선들은 타자를, 검정 스트라이프는 이태준과 함께한 사운드워크의 길을 시각화한다. 네 사람의 삶의 선이 만나고, 흩어지고, 다시 이어지며, 삶과 죽음 이후의 여정이 순환하는 과정을 보여준다. 이러한 연결을 통해 마침내 박선민의 삶의 선은 쓰러지지 않고 직립하고 있음을 보여준다.
