draw and DELAY
Geometry is a discipline devised to divide and organize nature artificially. Born from the practical need to measure land, geometry provided the knowledge required to cultivate nature and make it useful to human beings. To draw lines across undivided land and divide its area into standardized units is to comprehend and utilize nature through human logic.
The same can be said of every rule and system of division and distribution. Dividing the spectrum of visible light into seven colors, organizing time into seven-day weeks, dividing pitch into a seven-note scale—all are rules invented by human beings in order both to conform to and resist the order of nature.
Park Sunmin’s Fa, La Thur., Sat. series begins from a similar impulse. The series originated in an encounter with a death. Rather than narrating the specific circumstances of that event, however, the work records an extended process through which the artist attempts to come to terms with the fundamentally incomprehensible fact of death.
Like a geometer, Park imposes rules upon a formless event. She gathers newspaper headlines from Thursdays and Saturdays and composes them into a poem. She translates Thursday and Saturday into the notes Fa and La of the seven-note scale and constructs a musical composition. She then translates that melody, according to another arbitrary system, into combinations of green and navy lines, before establishing a further logic through which the planar poem or melody is translated into three-dimensional form.
Beginning with thoughts on death, she thus composes a poem through a method reminiscent of Dadaist procedures and, over an extended period of time, repeatedly translates its results—visually and aurally, from two dimensions into three. In this exhibition, Fa, La Thur., Sat.—Seven Voices, translated into green and navy lines, is presented alongside Fa, La Thur., Sat.—The Place, in which those lines are translated into three dimensions.
Park’s geometric attitude, however, does not seem intended to fully comprehend the problems of loss and death, memory and forgetting, to which beings bound by time are inevitably subjected. Rather, geometry appears to have been chosen as a means of remaining for as long as possible within the interval between understanding and misunderstanding.
Geometry was originally conceived as a theoretical framework for understanding natural objects, but above all it was a practical means of transforming and making use of them. Park’s geometry, by contrast, has no utilitarian purpose and seeks no beneficial result. The rules of measurement and distribution she imposes upon herself constitute instead a paradoxical geometry designed to defer a definitive outcome for as long as possible.
Moving continuously from language to image, from the visual to the auditory, and from the two-dimensional to the three-dimensional, the geometry of Fa, La Thur., Sat. presupposes no final destination. Deductive rules imposed without a predetermined endpoint leave us wandering somewhere between language and image, vision and sound, two dimensions and three.
Park Sunmin’s drawing is an act of producing such an interval. The line she draws is neither completely geometric nor entirely random; it retains the tension between the two. The interval traced by this line is a site of dialectical suspension—unable to completely subdue the inevitable time of loss, yet equally unwilling to surrender entirely to resignation.

draw and DELAY
